From Penticton to the world stage, Aidan Danby has stayed humble about his achievements and contributions to Canada’s sweep of the World Junior Lacrosse Championship. Though he is proud of his efforts, he is quick to point out that it’s not just him playing, but a whole team.

“It feels pretty good to know that you’re the best in the world for sure; that your team was the best. That’s a pretty cool feeling. It’s a pretty cool accomplishment for us.”

Danby was one of 23 players from across the entire country selected to play for the Canadian Junior Team. Canada swept all four games they played in the tournament, and it was something that Danby won’t soon forget.

“It was really cool, it was a cool experience. It was nice to be able to play at that high of a level of lacrosse, because you aren’t able to do it that often living in Penticton,” said Danby “[I was] not expecting it, but kinda hoping that I could get to that level at some point in my career definitely; and I got super lucky that it happened earlier.”

Danby was called the “unsung hero of team Canada” by commentators at the tournament, and he was offered a scholarship and roster position in New York’s Rochester University lacrosse team. He turned that offer down and decided to stay in Canada, where he hopes to continue pursuing his lacrosse career at Simon Fraser University.

“I want to play professional lacrosse, and I think I can do that earlier by playing lacrosse here in Canada,” said Danby. “The schools are both really good, and that’s not really affected by whether I choose the States or Canada. But here I get to stay a little closer to home.”

Before getting called up to join Canada’s junior team, Danby played for the South Okanagan Flames for the last two seasons, as well as picking up three silver medals with Team B.C. in Canadian Field Lacrosse. Starting in the spring, Danby plans to play for Simon Fraser University Clan in the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League, before joining the Burnaby Lakers in the Junior A box lacrosse for the summer.
