Penticton Track and Field Club to begin in April

New club will prepare participants for provincial championships

A new track and field club has been formed in Penticton.

The Penticton Track and Field Club will begin its season on Monday, April 4. The club is open to athletes between the ages of eight and. 18. It will meet at the Penticton Secondary School Track Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The club’s focus will be on fun and fitness, while also providing competitive opportunities and achieving personal best performances.

The spring training is to prepare for the B.C. Championships in July.

Ryan and Melissa Hayden of Naramata bring their coaching experience from the Langley Mustangs and Ryan also has experience as a former Canadian National Team member and NCAA athlete.

Mike and Brenda Van Tighem of Summerland have coached as Canadian team and university coaches, as well as with clubs in Kelowna, Kamloops and Calgary.

Ryan and Erin Hvidston of Penticton have both been former USport (Canadian University) competitors and Ryan has represented Canada internationally.

Melinda Medland of Penticton brings coaching experience from the Trail Track Club and has led an indoor Run, Jump, Throw! program in Penticton in February and March, 2022.

Rob Osiowy is also sports coach certified and will serve as the Parent Liaison.

Coaches from the club teamed up with the city of Penticton in the summer of 2021 and offered eight weeks of track and field camps to 45 young athletes. The club also offered a cross country running program in the fall of 2021 and several athletes went on to compete at the B.C. Cross Country Championships in Victoria.

The club is planning on hosting a Twilight meet in Penticton in June and will travel up to Kelowna for the Jack Brow Memorial Meet at the end of June. Athletes who wish to pursue a competitive season into the summer will compete at the B.C. Championships in Langley, July 23 and 24. Athletes born in 2007 and 2008 will also be encouraged to qualify for and compete at the B.C. Summer Games in Prince George this summer.
