Another goaltender with Western Hockey League (WHL) experience is joining the Penticton Vees.

Penticton signed Carter Serhyenko on Monday (Dec. 27), making him the fourth netminder on the current roster.

It was on Dec. 7 when the Vees inked Mason Dunsford to a deal that would make him the third goaltender on the team.

But with Monday’s announcement, Serhyenko will add to the depth already seen at the position.

Serhyenko, like Dunsford, is a graduate of the WHL. The 19-year old spent parts of the last three seasons in Prince Albert backstopping the Raiders.

The newest member of the Vees also appeared at the Calgary Flames’ development camp prior to the start of the 2021-2022 NHL season.

In 17 games with Prince Albert this season, the Saskatoon-born goaltender posted a .881 save percentage.

The Vees signed Dunsford three weeks ago in response to the news that team goaltender Colin Purcell was dealing with an illness. Along with that came a formal announcement from head coach, general manager and president Fred Harbinson that the team would be carrying three goaltenders for the rest of the season.

Monday’s latest development, however, adds another name into the Penticton crease.

The Vees (20-3-0-1) are set to hit the ice in West Kelowna on Tuesday when they play the Warriors (16-9-0-0) for the second consecutive game.

Penticton will send off 2021 with a New Year’s Eve showdown against those same Warriors on Friday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
