The Penticton Silver Bullets won their first game in 28 years on Friday and doubled down one night later, putting a wrap on a “special weekend” at Memorial Arena.
A thrilling 5-4 comeback victory against the Powell River Regals brought a few hundred people to their feet on Oct. 14, all in name of supporting the reformed hockey team.
After trailing, the Penticton senior men’s team — consisting of players aged 21 to 41 with both professional and collegiate experience — battled back with Jagger Dirk scoring the game-winning marker with just four seconds left in the final frame.
On Saturday, the Silver Bullets cruised to a 6-1 victory to sweep the two-game opening weekend against the Regals.
“For a home opener, I don’t think it could have gone any better,” said Matthew Fraser, Penticton’s team captain. “We can do something special this year and we just hope this great hockey city continues to support us.”
Fraser recalls himself and the rest of his teammates watching those in the stands at Memorial Arena, embracing the squad and their return to the community after disbanding in 1994.
“We were all just thinking, ‘wow, this is pretty awesome’ as we watched people come and support the team,” he said.
