On Saturday, the Penticton Pistoleras will be hosting it’s first of three roller derby bouts this year.

Melody Rempel, or ‘Bliss -Krieg’ as she’s known in roller derby, has been a member of the Pistoleras for five years. Before taking up roller derby, she attended a bout just like the upcoming one and was instantly hooked.

“It’s really exciting, you might not know exactly what’s going on if it’s your first time, but everything’s going on at once and it’s super exciting,” she said. “There are girls hitting, girls falling, and girls going really fast around the track. It’s fast-paced, and it’s really exciting.”

Programs at the bout will include an explanation of the rules and the bout itself so first timers can understand what is happening and why. Additionally, the Pistoleras will also give a demonstration of what is going to take place before the bout itself begins. Even though Rempel is a five-year veteran of the roller derby world, she still has her own personal goals for what she would like to accomplish.

“One of my common goals is to fall less,” she said. “I know that sounds really simple and basic, but you get knocked down a lot. If you’re not stable, you’re going to end up on the ground more than you’ll be in the pack with the skaters.”

Rempel was drawn in by the physicality of the sport, and anyone else who attends and becomes interested in trying it out will have the opportunity to do so that night. Rempel noted the Pistoleras are always looking for new skaters, volunteers and referees.

The bout takes place on Saturday, April 2 at 7 p.m. at the Penticton Curling Club against the Bad Reputations. Tickets are $10 in advance, or $12 at the door. Tickets are available in Penticton at LockWorks Inc., Saint Germain Café and Gallery, and Picture This Custom Framing. Anyone with further questions for the Penticton Pistoleras is encouraged to contact them through Facebook, or by email at sordameat@gmail.com.
