The Summerland Steam Junior B hockey team will recognize its players at an awards ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 24.

Mike Rigby, general manager of the team, said the ceremony is a way to honour the players, coaching staff, volunteers and billet families.

“We had a pretty young team this year. We had to do a bit of a regroup,” he said.

Despite this regroup effort, the team is in second place in its division this year.

The awards to be presented are regular season MVP, most sportsmanlike player, top defence, top scorer, most improved player, top rookie and fan favourite.

Another award, playoff MVP, will be given at the end of the playoff season.

Rigby is pleased with the development he has seen in the Summerland Steam players over the past year.

“We’re helping mold and develop these kids for the short period of time that we have them,” he said.

At the end of this season, four 20-year-old players are leaving the team since they are aging out of the league. The players are goaltender Jared Breitkreuz, defence Dawson Jenner, forward Linden Gove and team captain Everett Scherger.

Breitkreuz, Jenner and Gove are all from Summerland.

The team also has had five sets of brothers playing on the team this year. “I believe this is a KIJHL record,” he said.

The team will finish its regular season on the weekend and will go into playoff action beginning on Feb. 26.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Summerland Youth Centre, 9111 Peach Orchard Rd. on Sunday, Feb. 24 from 2 to 5 p.m. It is open to the public.
