Tigers headed into home stretch on the fly

The SOMBA Tigers are heading into the home stretch of the B.C. Baseball Bantam AA U15 regular season on a tear.

The club picked up another four wins with victories in two double headers last weekend to improve their record to 20 wins and just two losses in league play.

The wins kept the squad in second place in the 21-team league, behind the leaders, Surrey-Newton Canadians who sport a record of 29 wins and a pair of losses.

With nine games in hand, the Tigers have a win percentage of .909 while the Canadians are sporting a .935 percentage.

Their only losses were to the Burnaby Braves and Surrey-Newton.

The Tigers will make up two of the games this weekend when they travel to Vernon Sunday for a double header against the Canadians.

This Saturday the Tigers host the Richmond Chuckers at McNicoll Park for a pair of games at noon and 3:15 p.m.

The bats continued to do their work for the locals last weekend, on Saturday downing Salmon Arm 11-1 and 25-1 in Salmon Arm.

They returned home Sunday where the faced the Vancouver Minor Expos.

The Tigers topped the visitors 16-6 in the first game and were able to overcome a 5-1 deficit two pull out a 7-5 win in the second.

“The team has been very consistent this season,” said Tigers head coach Iain MacIntyre. “They have persevered from trailing behind in runs to coming up and taking the win.

“The team is not only a team but a family unit. The players and parents connect both on and off the field and help each other out in ball and in life.”

The upcoming playoff schedule will include the wildcard games in Mission in late July followed by the east and west provincials Aug. 1 to 4 in Burnaby and Ladner to determine the two teams that will play for the championship Aug. 5 in Richmond City.

The winner of that game will earn the right to travel south for the Triple Crown Sports San Diego Sizzle Championships Aug. 9 to 13.
