Trio of Penticton Vees named alternate captains ahead of 2022-2023 campaign

Three alternates will join captain Frank Djurasevic in defending the Fred Page Cup title

Three Penticton Vees have been asked to play an important leadership role ahead of the 2022-2023 BCHL season.

Josh Nadeau, Josh Niedermayer, and Spencer Smith have been named alternate captains, the team announced Friday, Sept. 2.

“With 14 returning players we had a plethora of options for alternate captains,” said Fred Harbinson, the team’s head coach, general manager and president. “Josh Nadeau, Spencer Smith and Josh Niedermayer will do an outstanding job in helping Frank (Djurasevic) lead our team.”

The ones wearing the “A” will join Djurasevic, the team captain, in the Vees’ leadership group.

Nadeau, entering his second season in Penticton, posted 72 points in 54 games last season while leading all BCHL playoff performers in scoring during the team’s run to the Fred Page Cup.

Niedermayer, meanwhile, follows his Hockey Hall of Fame father, Scott, in being named as part of a leadership group. The 18-year-old was called upon to play in a shutdown role during the team’s playoff run, only being on the ice for one even-strength marker once in 17 games.

The defenceman is committed to Arizona State University, where he is expected to join his brother and former Penticton Vees forward, Jackson Niedermayer.

Smith will wear the “A” in his final season of junior hockey. The centre tallied 11 goals and 25 points during the Vees’ division-winning regular season in 2021-2022.

Penticton kicks off its pre-season schedule Sept. 9 when they welcome the Vernon Vipers to the South Okanagan Events Centre.
