Medicine Hat Tigers star Hunter Shinkaruk was selected 24th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2013 NHL Draft.

Vancouver, meet your newest Canucks – Hunter Shinkaruk and Bo Horvat

The Vancouver Canucks traded Cory Schneider to New Jersey, and selected Horvat and Shinkaruk in the 1st round of the 2013 NHL Draft.

Chances are, you don’t need to me to tell you what to think of either Bo Horvat or Hunter Shinkaruk, and you probably don’t care what I’d think of the Cory Schneider deal because, hey, you’re a Canuck fan, and you already have an opinion on it.

It’s safe to say, you watched the first round and then furiously Googled both Horvat and Shinkaruk and consulted the mouth of Bob McKenzie.

I won’t tell you much, other than I personally couldn’t be happier with how the first round went today in New Jersey, even though I hate to let go of any once-in-a-generation goaltender – and I think Roberto Luongo and Schneider are both just that. Horvat and Shinkaruk could each be first liners on next year’s Canadian World Junior team, and they immediately take pressure off young “stars” like Zack Kassian and Jordan Schroeder, both of whom either aren’t ready or maybe aren’t capable of carrying the load offensively for this team one day.

I’m pumped to have an OHL Playoff MVP and a sharp shooter from Medicine Hat who could be the closest thing to Patrick Kane from Sunday’s draft.

New head coach John Tortorella now inherits a complete depth chart, a (formally) resolved goalie situation, and a team that is suddenly built for the future and shedding fewer assets than the Boston Bruins and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Anyway… enjoy the embeds:
