Vees pick up first win over Salmon Arm on the road

The Penticton Vees picked up their first win at the Shaw Centre this season with a 3-2 victory over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks Friday.

Anthony Brodeur made 18 saves while Tyson Jost scored the winner with his 38th goal assisted by David Eccles and Demico Hannoun.

It was the home side that struck first in the Interior Division battle as Nick Hutchison made it 1-0 at 2:42 of the second period. Hannoun put the Vees back on even terms nine minutes later with his 13th assisted by Dixon Bowen and Luke Voltin.

Chris Gerrie put the Vees up 2-1 with his 15th assisted Scott Conway at 8:19 of the third. The Silverbacks countered quickly as Tiro Hirose beat Brodeur on a breakaway with a high backhand shot. Jost's winner came at 15:40 as he tipped Eccles point shot past Angus Redmond after winning the face-off.

The Vees doubled the Silverbacks in shots 41-20.

Jost (12-games) and Scott Conway (19-games) extended their respective point streaks. Conway’s lead atop of the BCHL scoring race is now six points, with his assist Friday. He has 111 points to 105 by Nanaimo's Sheldon Rempal. The Vees improved their record to 27-5 against their own division and are now 6-0 in February. On the season, the Vees are 47-6-0-1.

Attendance was 1,356.

In other BCHL action with playoff implications, West Kelowna defeated the Vernon Vipers 5-4, the Trail Smoke Eaters defeated the Merritt Centennials 6-4. The Centennials remain two points back of the Vipers for the last playoff spot, while the Smoke Eaters are within one point of the Centennials and three of Vernon with three games remaining.
