Vees snap skid against the SilverBacks

Travis Blanleil pots the winner to end Vees' five-game drought against the SilverBacks.

The skid is over.

The Penticton Vees defeated the Salmon Arm SilverBacks 3-2 Friday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre. It's the Vees' first win against the SilverBacks in six games.

Travis Blanleil's second period tally at 9:58 from Riley Alferd and Brett Beauvais stood as the winner.

The Vees opened the scoring at 14:10 of the opening frame when Alferd's shot from the point snuck through Angus Redmond. Steen Cooper and Cody DePourcq helped set up the goal.

The Vees and SilverBacks traded goals in the second period at Landon Smith even things at one with his 41st goal of the season 7:29 minutes in. The Vees then tallied back-to-back goals from DePourcq and Blanleil. Former Vee Max Becker countered for the SilverBacks, who were outshot in the frame 20-6 and 40-20 overall.

Both teams were given six power plays, but the SilverBacks managed the only goal with the advantage from Becker.

Hunter Miska turned aside 18 shots for his 16th win of the year, and his ninth at the SOEC. The Vees improve to 31-13-2-4 in 50 games. They travel to Surrey for a game against the Eagles Saturday evening at the South Surrey Arena. It will be the first meeting between the teams since the Vees acquired Nicolas Pierog for Anthony Conti. In 11 games with the Vees, Pierog has two goals and five points, while Conti has five goals and 10 points in 11 games for the Eagles.
