The Penticton Vees came out on top on Friday night in their game versus the Merritt Centennials.

The final score was 6-1 for the Vees, three of those goals being scored by James Miller. He first put the Vees on the board with a slap shot at 4:45 in the first period.

Jackson Niedermayer carried the puck down the left wing into the Merritt zone shortly after. Austin Roden made the save for the Centennials but Ryan Sandelin was quick to the rebound and scored the Vees next goal making the score 2-0.

At nine and a half minutes, Miller went on to score his second goal with a wrist shot. David Silye would go on to lead two shorthanded breakaways which were both denied.

Eric Linell scored the Vees next goal thanks to forechecking by Jack Barnes. Some penalty trouble for the Centennials led to a 5-on-3 powerplay where Miller was able to complete his hat trick with a goal at nine minutes into the second period.

The Vees had some penalty trouble as well when Brendan Harrogate and Peter Muzyka earned penalties at the same time. Shortly after, Miller was given a double minor for high sticking, leaving the Vees shorthanded for six minutes.

This allowed Merritt to score their first and only goal of the game when Rylan Van Unen was able to knock a loose puck into the net following Jack LaFontaine’s initial save of a one timer from the right circle.

Linell found the back of the net again in the third period, earning his second goal of the game and making the final game score 6-1. The shot clock showed 33-32 for Merritt through 60 minutes.

The Penticton Vees will be hosting the West Kelowna Warriors tonight at the South Okanagan Events Centre where captain Massimo Rizzo is expected to make his season debut. The Vees will also be unveiling the name of their new furry mascot before puck drop at 6 p.m.
