Walk off single powers Penticton U16 team to provincials

The Penticton Power U16 girls fastball team will be competing at the provincial championship after taking the gold medal at district playdowns in Sicamous last weekend.

The Power went 5-0 at tournament taking down Enderby and Kelowna in the round-robin. They met Enderby again and handily defeated them 13-4 then matched up against Summerland, defeating them 9-3 before meeting them again in the gold medal game.

Tied going into the bottom of the seventh and their season on the line, the Power’s Alexa Schneider got on base with a walk, then stole second and third base. Teammate Sydney Clark stepped to the plate and hit a line drive base hit to right centrefield, driving in Schneider for the walk off win to defeat Summerland 5-4.

Coach Craig Denton said the Power had a great finish to the regular season winning their last six regular season games, lifting them to the league title and setting them up for a successful playdowns.

During the tournament Kara Gilfillen hit a bases-loaded triple, in the semi-finals Paige Denton hit the teams only homerun of the weekend and the teams leading hitters for the weekend were Brittanie Apps (.692 average) and Ella Nuttgens (.636 average).

The Power will play in the provincial championship in Ridge Meadows July 13 to 15.
