Sunny weather and a large crowd contributed to a great Young Guns Memorial Weekend for Penticton Speedway.

“In 19 seasons that I have owned this race track, this was the first really nice for weather,” said owner Johnny Aantjes. “I really considered a number of times taking my races off the May Long weekend. It just never seemed to be good, but always managed to get the races in.”

The Speedway attracted just over 3,000 for the two days of racing. There were two unfortunate incidents that occured, one involving a hornet driver, and the other a specatator. A young hornet driver put his vehicle hard into the wall and was taken to hospital to be cared for, while a spectator was hit by a piece of plywood during the Eve of Destruction.

“She’s pretty tough,” said Aantjes. “Thankfully she wasn’t seriously hurt. I think it was more of a shock to her.”

The spectator was struck after debris flew when the car Aantjes was driving hit a trailer. When asked about taking precautions to make it more safe, Aantjes said there is fencing all along the wall.

“In 18 years, this is the first time that something has got through at this nature,” said Aantjes. “It’s one of those freak accidents.”

When it came to racing, a group of new drivers impressed Aantjes, saying their performances was a good start to the season. It is also what they look for in the first four or five events and build momentum.

“Right now it looks good,” he said.
