Morning Start: Did you know that heavy artillery can be used for avalanche control?

Your morning start for Friday, March 13

Good morning, it’s the worst day of the week.

Fun Fact of the day: Did you know that heavy artillery can be used for avalanche control?

Avalanches pose a big threat to anything that might get in their way, so governments bring out the big guns to deal with them – literally. To prevent a larger more devastating avalanche, smaller ones are triggered by detonating charges either above or on the snow surface. Explosives can be deployed in various ways like hand tossing a bomb from a helicopter, shelling with a small howitzer or air gun.

Cadets of the 222 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron - Shuswap branch, learned about this up close when they visited Rogers Pass earlier this month and toured the artillery pieces used for this very purpose.
