Since BC Housing announced their plans to construct a new supportive housing building on Skaha Lake Road, Penticton city council has received feedback from many locals who are concerned about adding another supportive housing facility to Penticton.

BC Housing has plans to construct the facility at 3240 Skaha Lake Road. The building would be modelled after Burdock House on Winnipeg Street — a supportive housing building completed in October 2019.

However, city council recently voted in favour of a notice of motion introduced by the mayor seeking a provincially-funded, transparent, third-party audit of three existing supportive housing facilities in Penticton.

The city would like to see the evaluation completed before any development permits or further developments with BC Housing’s new Skaha Road project are allowed.

Council would also like to see BC Housing look for solutions to housing challenges faced by seniors and low-income working families rather than just those currently experiencing homelessness.

City council and many residents clearly have reservations about allowing another supportive housing project in the city. How do you feel about it? Let us know by voting in the poll below.
