Dancing in the street is just a small part of the fun to be had at Ellis on the Rise – the annual block party happening Friday, May 25, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Working in partnership with Ellis Street businesses, the Downtown Penticton Association is delivering an evening of activities for all ages, with live music, a chalk art competition and well-stocked beverage garden.

“Ellis on the Rise is the kick off event to the DPA’s full summer season of community-based events that showcases the best of downtown Penticton” said Lynn Allin, the DPA’s executive director.

According to Allin, Ellis Street - from Westminster East to the round-about - will be closed from 3 to 9 p.m., so members of the community can safely stroll along the block and set up lawn chairs to enjoy the musical entertainment and other event features.

Starting at the block’s north end, event goers will find plenty of family-friendly activities ranging from a bouncy castle to cup cake decorating, plus a petting zoo. The chalk art competition is also back this year. Artists will begin their masterpieces at 4 p.m. and must be finished by 5:30 p.m. for judging by attendees.

“The chalk art competition is a special activity that draws people of all ages and artistic abilities. Entrants can be individuals or groups,” said Allin, noting it is free to participate and applications can be downloaded from the DPA website.

At the north end of the block will be the beverage garden, putting contest and entertainment stage with musicians playing throughout the evening. Also, Penticton firefighters will be there barbequing hotdogs and hamburgers to raise funds for their charity, so having some cash for their cause is recommended.

“The evening promises to be a great way to celebrate that Penticton’s fabulous summer is finally here” said Allin. For a full overview the Ellis on the Rise event and partners, visit downtownpenticton.org.
