The annual drive to raise thousands of pounds worth of food begins this weekend in Penticton.

The Peach City is among the B.C. communities participating in this year’s province-wide Thanksgiving food drive, courtesy of the local Salvation Army.

Volunteers have been dropping donation bags to residential homes this week, in anticipation of the food drive on Saturday, Sept. 24.

As part of the 11th annual BC Thanksgiving Food Drive, Penticton has the task of contributing to this year’s province-wide goal of collecting 600,000 pounds of food.

According to the organization, grocery stores across the province started to collect food donations this week.

Those in Penticton with the volunteer-distributed bags, meanwhile, are asked to leave their final donations on their doorstep prior to 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Alternatively, people can drop off their donations at the Salvation Army on 2469 South Main Street from Friday until Saturday at noon.

The B.C. food drive collected about 500,000 pounds of food in 2021, thanks to the support of more than 4,800 volunteers.

In Penticton, the Salvation Army list non-perishable pasta, sauce, canned soups, juice boxes, canned fruit and vegetables among the high-priority items.
