Church lines up summer sermons

Penticton United Church will be hosting its fifth Sermons That Speak summer program, bringing in nationally renowned reverends every Sunday through July and August.

This year, Rev. Dr. John Pentland and Rev. Laura Turnbull will be returning to speak with services also featuring Rev. Dr. Stephen Farris, Rev. Dr. Ross Lockhart and Rev. Janet Gear, who are travelling from around the country to participate in the event for the first time.

Five years ago, church members went to Toronto where other affiliations were carrying out a Sermons That Speak program and felt it was such a great idea that they decided to bring it to the Penticton branch.

“It’s a good way to get people coming out during the slow summer days,” said Gus Boersma, who has been with the church since 1991 and is chairman of the communications committee. “We started doing inquiries to find speakers and everything fell into place ... We’re opening our doors to everyone in the community.”

The church services will each run an hour long and will have a worship time with songs by a choir along with a message from one of the guest reverends. For those that have children, Sunday school is available.
