It has been hard times of late for man and animals alike. That is why Critteraid is opening Penticton’s only indoor yard sale, a weekly market of well-priced used and/or donated items to benefit the organization’s many four-legged friends.
The yard sale will hold its grand opening this Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 109 - 2203 Dartmouth Dr.
The festivities will kick off with a ceremonial ribbon cutting by Summerland Mayor Janice Perrino and Penticton Mayor Dan Ashton, followed by coffee donated by Tim Hortons and baked goods and at 11 a.m. barbecued burgers donated by M&M Meats. There will also be door prizes, with drawings each half hour throughout the day.
The indoor yard sale will continue on every Saturday at the same times with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to Critteraid and its many projects.
A registered charity that operates on donations, grants and the generosity of its many volunteers, Critteraid was established in 1992 to provide refuge for unwanted, abused or abandoned animals.
Located on a 10-acre farm, Critteraid’s Summerland Cat Sanctuary currently hosts 93 cats, 17 guinea pigs, a donkey, an alpaca, and a horse named Faith. According to the organization, the sanctuary is committed to keeping the lives of its guests “free from anxiety” while providing a healthy environment, medical attention and help finding “responsible caring human beings” to adopt them.
“Things have been tough for us lately with funding cutbacks and the rising costs of supplies and animal care,” said Critteraid spokesperson December Foster.
“But we’re optimistic and excited that the (indoor yard sale) is going to be the beginning of many new possibilities for us.”
Foster said those looking to donate goods for the yard sale are being asked to drop off the items at 3099 Coleman St., and those looking to get involved with the organization can call Jean Bowden at 250-770-8068.
