Event highlights students talents

The District Fashion Show at Princess Margaret Secondary School Friday is showcasing students finished garments that they have been working on this year. The 7 p.m. show will feature clothes and other sewing projects from students in Grade 9 to 12 from the three district high schools: Princess Margaret, Penticton Secondary and Summerland Secondary.

Some of the more popular pieces include jackets and dresses. Among the rest of the selection there will be hoodies, yoga pants, slippers and quilts. A portion of the show will feature recycled garments made of used jeans as Go Green, a fashion show competition specifically for recycled materials, isn’t running this year.

Dana Kocsis of Princess Margaret and Patti Lindquist of Penticton Secondary are the textile teachers involved in making the event happen, as well as Pat Gartrell from Summerland Secondary who has been teaching there for 20 years and has been a part of the program since its start six years ago.

“It’s a great way to showcase students work that isn’t academic, this is something where students that have a passion in this area can be acknowledged and validated,” said Gartrell.

The event, which they are hoping will have the usual turnout of about 100, is by donation where all proceeds go towards the event and supplies for the textile programs.
