Fire safety sparks interest in Penticton students

The prevention division of the Penticton Fire Department holds its season-ending program

Cycling and fire safety were on the agenda Thursday at the Penticton Safety Village.

Students from Uplands Elementary School had an opportunity in the morning to learn a little bit about both and a chance to tour the inside of a fire truck as well as give Sparky the Penticton Fire Department Mascot a high five.

The event was the department’s season wrap up of fire education program at the non-profit facility.

Through the instruction kids learn about what and what not to do in the event of a fire in the fire safety house on site.

“The fire safety village is such great education for the kids,” said Jody Fotherby, of the department’s fire prevention division. “It teaches children about home escape planning and how important it is to have a plan, that we have working smoke alarms that we have a meeting place in order for us to stay safe.”

In addition to the skills relating to inside the house the students also learn techniques such as stop, drop and roll to put out a fire on themselves.

The fire prevention division works throughout the school year visiting as many locations as possible to spread the word and teach skills about fire safety to students.

“This is very important for children to know at any level,” she said.

The Safety Village also began offering free open bike days after school in May and they will continue with two more events, June 25 and 27 starting at 3 p.m.

There is no cost and children are required to bring a bike and helmet.

A second family day is planned for June 28 at 4 p.m.
