A Penticton community group is hosting an evening discussion on 5G networks, the next level of cellular technology that will bring high-speed internet to smartphones and other devices as it is rolled out over the next few years.

Some people have concerns about the safety about 5G, as have been raised about wi-fi and other levels of cellular technology over the past decade.

Kevin Proteau of Locals Supporting Locals is hosting the event, which starts at 8 p.m. tonight (July 24) in Craft Corner Kitchen. It begins with a movie regarding 5G, followed by a discussion session.

In a release, Proteau said that because they believe this is an election issue, current and potential city councillors and mayors have been invited to attend, to hear the concerns and questions from residents regarding the new technology, which requires many more cell antennas what is to support it.

5G cellular uses a higher radio frequency than previous networks, which means the radio waves don’t travel as far, hence the need for more antennas, which could be mounted on lampposts and other convenient structures. It allows for data to be transmitted at higher speeds than wired networks, and also enables an increase in the amount of data transmitted — allowing for not only higher speeds on cell phones but enabling other potential technologies.
