Fire Prevention Week kicks off today, Oct. 6 with the campaign “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!”
The campaign is aimed at educating everyone on the important actions, no matter how small, can be taken to keep themselves and those around them safe.
The Penticton Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to help spread this campaign message, as most fire deaths occur in the home, where people believe they are most safe.
According to fire prevention officer Capt. Mike Richards, Canadian fire departments respond to roughly 25,600 structure fires per year.
“In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds,” stated Richards. “Escape planning and practice can help you make the most of the time you have, giving everyone enough time to get out.”
The Penticton Fire Department is hosting a series of events in support of this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign:
- Pen Hi Drama , Gr. 9 performs Fire Safety Presentation: Oct. 7, 8 and 9 from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m at Penticton Elementary Schools in School Dist. #67
- Fire Extinguisher Training: Oct. 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Fire Station 202, 285 Dawson Ave.Pre-Registration Required - $5
- Fire Chief for a Day Ceremony/Bootcamp: Oct. 12 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Fire Station 202, 285 Dawson Ave
