A Penticton business has stepped up to make sure the school district’s breakfast program runs a little smoother.

After hearing the program had a wish list of items to help run the program, including toasters, griddles, plates and other items, Neil Jamieson from Underwriters Insurance made sure it got fulfilled.

“A list of items was sent out to members of the Penticton Speedway Foundation and I just went and purchased them to make the volunteers at the breakfast program’s life a little easier,” said Jamieson.

Underwriters Insurance has been involved with the program for almost eight years, with both the staff fundraising and the company itself directly donating to it.

“It’s a pretty grassroots program. Basically when kids have full stomach’s in the morning and a good breakfast they perform better.

You see huge impacts on the level of attendance, grades go up and those sorts of things,” said Jamieson.

Underwriters Insurance is also involved with the B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame, the Penticton Vees and award a number of scholarships for minor sports. Jamieson said his mother also funds scholarships given to graduating Penticton students. He said the inspiration to give back comes from his father, Dunc Jamieson, who the Penticton Minor Hockey Association Lifetime Achievement Award is named after. A similar award is handed out by the B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame in his name.

“It really does come from my father. Our company has been in business for 65 years and we have been very fortunate in Penticton.

My father really instilled giving back in our company culture,” said Jamieson.
