Valley First Credit Union awarded Olwen Gendall the Lead Well prize for her work as a volunteer at the Penticton Soupateria, which she redirected back to the nonprofit society.
Gendall said she was introduced to the Soupateria through her friend, Gwen Rikkinen, and after more recruitment they eventually found enough people to cover volunteering for their own entire day. The team of at least seven meet up at around 8 a.m. to get started on making the day’s soups, and by 1 p.m. they’ve served over 100 meals and cleaned the kitchen for the next day’s team.
“Five years later, our team is like a well-oiled machine,” Gendall said in her letter accepting the award. “I find it truly amazing that 150 to 200 volunteers in the community make this happen every single day of the year, It is truly an inspirational program, and I am happy to do my small piece every eighth Saturday.”
The Lead Well award recognizes employees for their leadership in the community, with the $500 award going towards a charity of their choice.
