Penticton’s Black Widow Rope Spinners take gold at Nationals

The competitive rope jumpers will perform eight shows at Peach Fest in August

Penticton’s competitive jump rope team, The Black Widow Rope Spinners took home gold at the Rope Skipping Canada National Champions in Kamloops over the May long weekend.

Fifteen jumpers from Black Widow competed throughout the weekend in single rope speed and freestyle events, as well as double Dutch speed. There were 265 rope jumpers in attendance at the nationals that weekend.

Most of the athletes are now prepping for the World Championship qualifying event and if successful they will compete on the world stage in Colorado Springs in July 2023.

Always a fan favourite at Penticton Peach Fest, the Black Widow Rope Spinners will wow the crowds again with five main stage shows and three Kids Zone performances.

At the Nationals, the overall team of Thomas Cunningham, Jordis Hickie, Helena Schales, Cameron Helm and Samuel Kliever took the gold medal in single rope overall, double Dutch overall and Team All Round.

The team of Bethany Holloway, Violet Gittel, Presley Hickie, Finn Tolley and Emma Menard took second place in both their team single rope speed relay and their double Dutch speed relay.

Mathew Turner and Finn Tolley took first in their double under relay and pairs freestyle. Jordis Hickie and Helena Schales took first in their wheel freestyle for the 14-15 category.

Jumpers took the podium in masters events with Jordis Hickie taking gold and Helena Schales taking bronze.

In the 30 plus age category coach Cathy Cunningham placed third overall in master’s events.
