The South Okanagan Women in Need Society (SOWINS) is set to launch its biggest fundraising campaign yet, in an effort to help women, children and local families during the holidays.

The organization’s Fall 2021 campaign is hoping to assist women and children who face being in violent and abusive relationships. It’s a reality that the group says has only been amplified throughout COVID-19.

“We have all come through some very difficult times and the women, children, and families we serve have been especially affected by this pandemic with isolation and abuse on the rise,” said Danielle Goulden, SOWINS executive director.

In June, the organization set records for its annual Walk to End Abuse when a total of at least $53,000 was raised.

Today, the charity that serves women, children and families have their eyes set on making this holiday season a life-changing one for thousands in the South Okanagan.

“There are many ways to give this year,” she said. “You can donate, sponsor a family or single woman or sponsor a backpack for someone that may not have a home for the holidays.”

The organization has been forced to find new and creative ways to engage the community, due to the pandemic-related restrictions mandated by the province.

That includes the group’s aforementioned annual walk in June, which was conducted both virtually and in person.

“The need for service has climbed and organizations like SOWINS have had to come up with some creative ways to ensure their clients are receiving the support they need under strict provincial health guidelines.”
