SOVAS issues call for phones

Your old cell phone can bring new help to victims of abuse.

Your old cell phone can bring new help to victims of abuse.

The South Okanagan Victim Assistance Society is currently running a cell phone recycling program sponsored by Shelter Alliance, which gives money to SOVAS for each phone recycled. SOVAS uses these donations to provide counseling, court support and information to individuals who have experienced abuse.

U Weight Loss of Penticton is partnering with SOVAS for this project, and you can help by dropping off your old cell phones to their location at #132-1848 Main St. or at SOVAS at #204-304 Martin St.

“We’re happy to be supporting SOVAS by acting as a drop-off location during the month of July” said Hannah McHeice, assistant manager at U Weight Loss.

Shelter Alliance does erase all information on cell phones, but recommends deleting personal information before dropping off cell phones.

SOVAS is also celebrating 20 years of service to the community. If you are interested in volunteering, donating or assisting with special events, contact SOVAS at 250-493-0800, or drop by the office.
