First Things First Okanagan is hosting a town hall to discuss Canada’s purchase of Trans Mountain pipeline.

The group, which is dedicated to raising awareness and promoting action on climate change, is holding the meeting on July 11, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the Penticton United Church’s lower parlour.

The town hall includes a screening of the documentary, Directly Affected: Pipeline Under Pressure — provided by 350.org, an international environmental organization that encourages citizens to take action on climate change — exploring the environmental and social effects of expanding the Trans Mountain pipeline, and discusses alternatives to continued dependence on energy from oil.

The intent of the town hall is to become better informed about the pipeline, to promote discussion of the costs and benefits of expanding the Trans Mountain Pipeline, to explore whether it is an appropriate project for Canada to spearhead in the context of climate change and to discover what the alternatives are.

According to First Things First, South Okanagan West Kootenay MP Richard Cannings has agreed to attend. Other MPs, MLAs, and local politicians have been invited.

This is a free event, but donations to help cover costs are welcome.
