Gas prices shot up in Penticton on Thursday morning, March 28, to around $1.74 per litre.

That’s up from the $1.59 to $1.65 per litre range most stations in the city have stayed within over the last few weeks.

Penticton represents the high end of South Okanagan gas prices on Thursday, with pumps in Oliver, Osoyoos and Summerland selling fuel for around $1.65 per litre.

Two stations in Summerland, however, are matching Penticton’s Thursday average of $1.74 per litre.

According to gasbuddy.com — a Texas-based site that tracks the price of fuel across North America — B.C.’s cheapest pump on Thursday is in Tappen, located about 15 kilometres north of Salmon Arm. Gas can be purchased for $1.57 per litre in that community.

That province-wide low is about 30 cents more expensive than the cheapest pumps in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.

On the high end, people visiting stations on the Lower Mainland can expect to pay upwards of $2 per litre.

British Columbia and eastern provinces like Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick stand alone in Canada as having their lowest fuel prices at a minimum of $1.55 per litre, according to GasBuddy.
