Penticton Secondary School is taking on four weeks of the Zero Waste Challenge and is encouraging other schools and businesses to do the same.
The Sustainability Club at Penticton Secondary has created a challenge that consists of four themed weeks to teach youth about sustainability. The challenge was inspired by the Great Okanagan Waste Reduction Challenge currently running until March 15.
Starting on Feb. 20, the first week of the challenge was a fashion waste reduction week. During this week students have planned a thrift table to spread awareness about the importance of reusing clothes and buying used clothing items.
The following weeks will be a plastic waste reduction week, a food impact week, and an outdoor/nature week that will encourage students to connect with their environment. Some other activities planned during the challenge include sustainability guest speakers, eco-friendly DIY workshops, and trivia.
In preparation for the challenge, club members checked out their compost and garden in Pen High’s courtyard, as well as taking note of recycling and garbage bins located throughout the school.
