Many are mourning the death of Okanagan Falls Firefighter Captain Robert Somerville who died of a work-related illness.
“It is with sadness the Okanagan Falls Fire Department announces the Line of Duty Death passing of Firefighter Captain Robert Somerville, as a result of a work-related illness. Our sincerest condolences go out to his family and friends,” reads a Facebook post from the OK Falls Fire Department (OKFD).
Captain Somerville was an active member of the department serving his community for more than 26 years. He leaves behind his wife, Teresa, children; Darren, Jordan, and Alan, as well as grandchildren.
“Rob was a man of dedication and integrity,” said Okanagan Falls Fire Chief Fred Dobransky. “We are grateful he was able to share his skills and knowledge with many recruits throughout his years with OKFD. We will miss him.”
The OK Falls fire hall flag will be lowered to half mast starting Oct. 17 for five days, in observation of his passing.
“Captain Somerville’s recent passing is a loss for the community of Okanagan Falls and the region,” says RDOS Chair Karla Kozakevich. “Our thoughts are with those impacted by this loss during this difficult time.”
Comments about Somerville have been pouring in since learning of his death.
“He was a consummate professional. He knew how to do every single job that a firefighter needed to know, he could run every truck, every pump and every piece of apparatus,” said Stuart Dickinson who worked alongside Somerville for a decade.
“I too had the privilege of working with Rob for over 26 years. A dedicated member, with a quiet manner and always a smile behind the moustache,” said Judy Morris.
Somerville was well known and loved in his community, serving as the printer to not only the Times Chronicle but to farmers and other members of the community.
