Vulnerable seniors will be provided with hot meals twice a week at the Penticton Seniors’ Drop-In Centre thanks to a new grant.

The $14,705 grant from the Government of Canada Emergency Community Support Fund, administered by the United Way Southern Interior BC and Valley First Credit Union will allow the Penticton Seniors’ Drop-In Centre to provide hot meals twice a week to seniors in Penticton until Jan. 21, 2021.

The grant was designed to help Canadian communities respond to the COVID-19 Pandemic. It will also provide resources for the drop-in centre’s planned reopening in October.

The Federal Government grant is being split, with $8,455 to pay for food costs and meal preparation and the remaining $6,250 to provide safety protocols for the reopening.

The popular Meals to Go program, launched by Penticton OneSky Community Resources, will also continue with the support of the Penticton Seniors’ Centre by preparing and delivering 200 meals a week to vulnerable seniors. To date, this program has delivered over two thousand meals since its inception on May 21. 2020.

Meals are delivered on Tuesday and Thursday at the cost of $5 per meal. Meal recipients are encouraged to “Have a Meal, Give a Meal” by donating a further $5 for a meal for someone else.
