James Miller will seek re-election to Penticton city council in the Oct. 15 election.
Miller was the fifth candidate to file his nomination papers and the first incumbent to register.
He was elected in a June 2021 by-election where he received 1,666 votes, 900 more than the next closest finisher, Isaac Gilbert.

Miller said in a press release that the biggest issues in this election will be the opioid crisis, crime reduction, assistance for those who are experiencing homelessness and lack of affordable housing.
Additionally, Miller promises to emphasize supporting not-for-profit festivals, reworking the RFP tendering process and restricting vacation rentals to primary residence only.
Miller helped raise money for a memorial bench for those lost in the opioid crisis. The bench will be unveiled in 2023. He has also been an outspoken advocate against Interior Health’s withdrawal of funding for Pathways Addictions and Resource Centre.
The managing editor of The Penticton Herald since 2008, Miller will take a leave of absence for the campaign period. If re-elected, he will resume his duties at The Herald, but with strict restrictions that he has worked during his current time at council.
He is one of two working journalists in B.C. who is an elected official. Barbara Roden, mayor of Ashcroft, is also editor of The Ashcroft-Cache Creek Journal, operated by Black Press.
