Charges have officially been filed by the provincial prosecution service against a BC Highway Patrol officer who injured two people in a crash in Okanagan Falls.

The BC Prosecution Service announced the charges of failing to stop at a stop sign and driving without due care on June 22.

The charges have both been filed against Const. Ian Wetzel-Eden over the July 10, 2022 incident.

According to information previously released by the Independent Investigations Office of BC, Wetzel-Eden was responding to an unrelated incident when he crashed into a civilian pickup truck at the intersection of Maple Street and 10th Avenue.

The driver and passenger of the pickup were both injured in the collision and transported to a hospital for treatment. One was described as having serious but non-life-threatening injuries at the time.

The IIO BC launched its investigation into the incident, and on April 18 published its findings, which included recommendations for charges against the officer involved.

The charges were approved by an experienced Crown Counsel who has no prior or current connection with the officer.

Wetzel-Eden’s first scheduled appearance in court is scheduled for July 19.
