A Summerland municipal councillor has announced her bid for the mayor’s chair in the municipal election next month.
Coun. Janet Peake, who was elected to Summerland council in 2014, made her announcement on the steps of municipal hall on Friday morning.
“I have experience and I think Summerland needs strong leadership,” she said. “We need strong people at the council table as well.”
She said Summerland needs more housing choices in the future.
As well, she said the community’s infrastructure, especially the roads, need to be addressed. She would like to see a plan for infrastructure improvement.
Peake also believes the tourism sector and business community need support from the next council.
“I think there’s great opportunity for a future that can be progressive and welcoming,” she said.
In addition to her time on Summerland’s municipal council, Peake has also served for 19 years in the District of Muskoka, township of Lake of Bays, Ont., where she was a local councillor, a regional councillor and for her last seven years there, a mayor.
“I’ve learned the ways to work with committees and groups and organizations and those are the strengths that I will bring to this elected office,” she said.
She will hold an open house Thursday, Sept. 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church Hall, 9311 Prairie Valley Rd. in Summerland.
“Let’s have a little discussion. That’s what community is all about.”
The municipal election will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20.
At present, Peake and Coun. Toni Boot have both announced they will be running for the mayoral role. Coun. Doug Holmes is the only councillor candidate who has formally declared his intentions.
The nomination period runs until Friday, Sept. 14.
