Penticton Today: Structure fire, women's march, council delay

It looks like we have another couple of days of warm weather – well, it feels warm – before daytime temperatures dip below freezing again. It was nice while it lasted. It's expected to get up to 2 C this afternoon, with scattered flurries this morning giving way to a mix of sun and clouds.

Keremeos volunteer firefighters spent 11 hours fighting a structure fire Saturday. Starting in the early hours of the morning, the fire presented a challenge, with no water on scene and a broken gas line making the site dangerous.

RCMP are tight-lipped about their investigation of a body found in the Willowbrook area but did say they body is that of a 27-year-old male from Kelowna, and they are treating it as an apparent homicide. An autopsy is scheduled to take place today. They are also investigating whether a stolen truck set on fire outside Kaleden is connected to the dead body.

The Women's March on Washington drew an estimated 500,000 and many more around the U.S. and Canada, including Kelowna, where men, women and children gathered at the Sails in Kelowna Saturday and engage in peaceful protest, and stand in solidarity with those participating in Washington D.C.

Oh, and if you're wondering what alternative facts mean, you're not the only one. Meriam Webster has a little to say on the subject - apparently, they've seen a spike in searches for "fact."

If you were looking forward to watching Penticton City Council debate their 2017 budget this week, you're in for a disappointment. On Friday afternoon city hall announced the discussions, already delayed from November, would be delayed to a yet-to-be-determined date in February.
