A leak in Penticton’s Canadian National Tug Boat caused by this year’s winter cold snap has prompted the city to begin repair work until the patching is complete.
A statement released by the city this week suggests the tug “sprung a leak in December or January, likely due to the lake ice during the Christmas cold snap.”
Approximately 75,000 litres of water will need to be removed during the repairs, the city added.
Repair work on the tug, located on Okanagan Lake alongside the SS Sicamous, began on Wednesday (March 2) and is expected to run throughout the rest of the week.
The diesel-powered tug boat moved to its current location in June of 2007 after being built in England and eventually launching on Okanagan Lake in 1948.
Public in the area should expect to see a scuba diving team working around the tug, as a result of the repair work.
The team is set to plug the leak and pump out water in the hull.
“All work will be conducted with proper permits with no harm to the environment.”
