Police pursuit leads to multiple charges

Three people were arrested and two charged in connection with a police pursuit.

Two people are facing numerous charges in connection with an incident involving a reported stolen vehicle and police pursuit Sept. 26.

Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth said a police officer found a man at Marron Valley Road and Highway 3A about 4:10 p.m. that day who reported his white Dodge Caravan had been stolen by two men wearing bandanas.

The man also told police he had been stabbed with a screw driver and was found to have an injury to back of his head. However, RCMP said the people involved in the alleged theft did not injure the man. He was transported to Penticton Regional Hospital by B.C. Ambulance Service.

Police then spotted the vehicle on Marron Valley Road, which according to Wrigglesworth then took off.

“About 30 minutes later they (police officers) saw it again near Shingle Creek Road and the spike belt was successfully deployed and the vehicle went off road near Prairie Valley Road,” said Wrigglesworth. “Three occupants fled from the vehicle and were all chased down within the next 45 minutes.”

A 39-year-old male, a 27-year-old male and 27-year-old female, Amos James Atkins and Jennifer Lynn Atkins, were all arrested. The older male was eventually released without charges and the female was charged with one count of possession of stolen property.

Amos Atkins was also charged with possession of stolen property, along with obstructing a police officer, causing a police pursuit and other offences, including breach of probation.

The pair had a bail hearing on Sept. 27 will appear again in provincial court Oct. 11 for arraignment and for a first appearance Oct. 18.
