The poppy campaign has been running in Penticton and across Canada ahead of Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.
Unlike the last few years through COVID, this time cadets will be able to hand out poppies and ceremonies will be fully open to the public with Penticton’s returning to the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre as well as the cenotaph.
Poppies are available to purchase at select grocery stores, coffee shops and retail outlets as well as the Legion #40 located at 257 Brunswick St.
2022 marks 101 years of the Remembrance Day poppy campaign. Funds raised will go toward various initiatives and programs to support Canadian veterans, their families and dependants, as well as seniors.
The Legion has scaled back the number of traditional poppy boxes at locations across the country where people can donate cash and receive a poppy pin, rolling out just over 27,000 tthis year compared to around 34,000 in 2021.
But the new campaign will feature the introduction of biodegradable poppies and wreaths made of natural materials such as paper, moss and bamboo.
It will also include “Poppy Stories,” an initiative allowing people to scan a lapel poppy with their smartphone and be presented with information about real Canadian veterans, including anecdotes about their lives, their roles within the military, where they served and what their passions were.
