Scenes like this one at a recent parks consultation meeting may be happening more often as the City of Penticton gears up for a major review of the Official Community Plan.

Penticton city council has a short agenda for their Jan. 10 meeting, but they are dealing with some weighty topics.

Council is being asked to approve the creation of an Official Community Plan task force and a set of guiding principles.

The report, to be presented at the Committee of the Whole meeting, follows up on a July 4, 2016 vote by council to review and update the OCP. The current plan was adopted in 2002, and though it covers a time frame of around 30 years, periodic reviews are expected.

The current OCP has been amended over 90 times to adjust to changing development pressures and trends, reflect new policies, strategies and plans.

School District board meeting

The Okanagan Skaha School District meets tonight (Jan. 9) and their agenda kicks off with an invitation to take part in a project intended to expand knowledge about early learning.

Kirsten Odian, an early learning helping teacher, is making a presentation to the trustees about the Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (CHEQ). It’s designed to gather information about children’s experiences from birth to kindergarten entry, to help develop services, programs and policies to support children’s healthy development.

The board is also being asked to approve a proposal for a hockey skills academy to start in September at Skaha Lake Middle School. Also up for approval is the district’s updated school closure/reconfiguration policy.

Along with discussing the $266, 527 funding redirected by the Ministry of Education announced last May, the school board will be hearing from Secretary-Treasurer Bonnie Roller Routley on the province’s $50 million funding announcement last week.
