Proposed indoor baseball facility hits grand slam with Penticton public

The 7,000-square-foot project was approved at a public hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 6

Penticton will soon be a place where people can participate in baseball activities all-year-long and the enthusiasm so far has been unmatched.

A full crowd at the public hearing Tuesday, Sept. 6, went home happy after the proposed 7,000 square-feet indoor baseball facility at 1603 Dartmouth Road officially got the green light.

The building will be the first of its kind in the South Okanagan.

“For four years now, we’ve typically seen people opposed to things who show up (to council meetings) but what speaks to this project and why it’s so exciting is that we have a room full of supporters,” said Coun. Campbell Watt. “That’s all that needs to be said about this.”

Several community members stood before mayor John Vassilaki and Penticton’s city councillors on Tuesday to voice their support for the project.

Owners of the indoor facility plan on offering services like hitting seminars, softball camps, coaching clinics and year-round academies.

With youth baseball players wearing Penticton-based jerseys, council unanimously approved the project.

“I see nothing but positives with this project,” said Coun. James Miller. “Thank you to the people with this vision for making it happen.”

Along with its baseball services, the facility plans on hosting birthday parties, yoga, lacrosse and physical and mental training for athletes for people from Penticton, Summerland, Peachland, Keremeos, Oliver and Osoyoos.

The entire project was approved within less than a month, with council first introduced to the development in mid-August.
