West Kelowna man arrested in Summerland for excessive speeding and failing roadside breath test

South Okanagan RCMP found three motorcycles travelling at speeds in excess of 144 kilometres over the weekend.

In Summerland on Saturday night, the South Okanagan Traffic Services team observed a motorcyclist travelling at high speeds on Highway 97. The motorcyclist was stopped by police just as he was entering Summerland at 170 km.

“Shockingly, this motorcyclist was also found to be under the influence of alcohol and failed a roadside breath test,” said Cpl. Ryan McLeod. “The 22 year old man from West Kelowna had his motorcycle seized and in addition to the FAIL IRP (Immediate Roadside Prohibitions), received a $483 fine for speed.”

The South Okanagan Traffic Services members conducted focused road checks and targeted enforcement measures on impaired drivers throughout the region over the weekend. A total of nine drivers provided breath samples in the FAIL range (over 100 mgs) and were issued 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibitions. RCMP said one driver was charged criminally and an additional three drivers received lesser driving prohibitions for breath samples in the WARN range (60 mgs – 99 mgs).

In Osoyoos on Saturday night, a 51 year old man from Oliver provided breath samples of 200 mgs (2.5 times over the limit). Criminal charges will be forwarded in this case.

McLeod said police received many positive remarks from the public this weekend and one of the impaired drivers was apprehended due to a tip from the public. He said RCMP would like to recognize and thank the communities for their continued support.
