Schools in Penticton and Summerland will receive expanded support from the RCMP in an effort to develop more positive relationships between students and police.
The Penticton RCMP announced on Wednesday, Nov. 9 that the current program will be expanding from one officer for all of the schools in SD67 to several Mounties making a presence.
Several current officers shared their desire to be part of the program, and they will be responsible for proactively establishing relationships with students and staff, being the main point of contact, and helping to support and enhance the safety and security of each school.
“The initial focus of this initiative will be on providing direct support to the secondary and middle schools in Penticton and Summerland, while elementary schools will continue to receive support from RCMP members as required through communication with the school district, school administration and RCMP detachment,” said Const. James Grandy, media relations with the Penticton RCMP.
The Penticton RCMP also announced the appointment of Jo Anne Ruppenthal to the role of Restorative Justice coordinator as of Nov. 9.
Ruppenthal will provide support to schools through educational initiatives focused on strengthening relationships through mediation and restitution within school communities.
