Penticton residents are invited to share their thoughts on the proposed framework for cannabis sales in the city on Aug. 28.

The city will be hosting an open house between 4 and 7 p.m. at the Penticton Trade & Convention Centre to discuss the topic of cannabis sales among other things. The framework up for review was developed following a city-wide survey conducted this past spring.

“The city-wide survey provided great direction for the development of the framework,” said Blake Laven, planning manager. “After reviewing our proposed approach with the business community and other stakeholders and with the recent information about the provincial licensing process, we have made some refinements and are now ready to more formally share the recommended results with residents.”

Key features of the proposed framework include where retail stores are permitted within the city, the number of retail stores allowed within the city, and what these stores are allowed to advertise or sell.

Under the proposed framework smoking and vaping cannabis will not be allowed on public property. As well, retail stores will not be permitted on the 100, 200 and 300 blocks of Main Street or Front Street.

Residents unable to attend the open house can review the materials and share their views by visiting www.shapeyourcitypenticton.ca beginning Aug. 24 through to Sept. 7. Paper copies of the feedback forms will also be available at City Hall and the library.

All feedback gathered will be used to refine the proposed framework and prepare necessary regulatory documents for city council to consider this fall.

Still to be confirmed is the city’s approach to processing applications for retail storefronts that are referred by the provincial government.

The framework is one of four topics that will be discussed at an open house.
