Every building at the South Okanagan Events Centre campus is going to be busy this weekend, and the City of Penticton is hoping to use the busy weekend to gather data for the parking study.

The complex is going to be hosting the Jehovah’s Witness Regional Convention, which regularly draws thousands of participants. But it’s also going to be hosting Penticton Minor Lacrosse’s midget Barnburner tournament, a Penticton Pikes swim meet at the Community Centre pool, zone hockey tryouts at the Okanagan Hockey Training Centre and Penti-Con pop culture and comics convention at the Trade and Convention Centre.

“We’re taking advantage of this busy weekend to gather data around parking usage, traffic patterns and pedestrian habits during bigger events,” said Bregje Kozak, recreation and facilities director. The parking study started last month with the release of a survey for visitors to the site and residents in the area.

According to city hall, the survey has already received nearly 500 completions and will run until June 13. Results from the survey as well as preliminary findings from the study will be shared with the public at an open house planned for 4 to 7 p.m. on June 25 at the Trade and Convention Centre.

Residents planning to visit the complex this weekend are encouraged to be aware of the following events and allow additional travel time.

To reduce traffic on the site this weekend, a shuttle service has been arranged for the convention which is expected to attract over 3,000 guests.

“It won’t be as busy as some weekends but residents are encouraged to consider the different events as they determine their plans,” said Kozak,
