It’s been a long time coming, but Penticton residents are finally going to be able to enjoy a stroll on the Kiwanis Walking Pier again this weekend.

The pier was closed in 2017 when it was damaged by storm-driven waves during that spring’s record-breaking high water levels in Okanagan Lake.

It’s remained closed since. High water levels in spring 2018 delayed repair work again and inspectors also found more damage relating to the aging of the structure.

“Once work was able to get underway in early September, the City was pleased to discover that repairs would proceed smoothly,” said city engineer Ian Chapman. “It’s great to see this popular landmark returned to a secure and safe state for all residents and visitors to once again enjoy”.

The work undertaken included replacing damaged decking, guard rails, pile caps, pilings and braces.
