In loving memory ~
With sadness, we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth Cass, 93, who died peacefully at the Village by the Station in Penticton on March 12, 2024.
Mary was born to Will and Ida Cass in 1930 in Trail, BC. She grew up there with her brother, Richard and sisters, Violet and Elaine. After graduating from Trail High School, she held jobs as a bank teller and in the accounting department at Cominco before making the big move, in 1958, to Vancouver, where she worked as a legal bookkeeper. She resided in the city for 40 years, then relocated to Penticton to be closer to family and to lead a quieter life.
Mary was a curious and eager traveller who explored nearly 30 different countries across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Polynesia. She once even sailed from Vancouver to the United Kingdom via the Panama Canal. During the early 1960s, she lived for 16 months in England and worked for the Heinz company in Middlesex. Her passion for travelling dovetailed with another interest: genealogical research. Mary scoured public records across England to unearth tidbits of family history.
A devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend, Mary was kind, generous and genial. She was an active member of the church community in both Vancouver (First Baptist) and Penticton (St. Andrew's Presbyterian). A voracious reader, she was always keen to tackle a crossword puzzle or play a board game with her nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend its sincere thanks to the nurses, care aids and volunteers at Village by the Station for the fine care provided to Mary while she resided there.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be greatly appreciated. A small memorial service is being organized for the late spring in North Vancouver.
