Letter: Clarence the pigeon dove isn’t a pigeon

Resident perturbed at mislabeled bird

I don’t know who got the information in the story on “Clarence the pigeon dove,” but the bird is a Eurasian collared-dove; in the picture one can see the band that gives it part of its name. Pigeons and doves are in different genuses, so one can’t have a “pigeon dove.” The Eurasian collared-dove is not native to North America, but somewhere in the past became feral, likely from ones that escaped from a fancier, and now has spread even quite far north in Canada. They seem to stay pretty much in urban and semi-rural areas but have displaced the native mourning dove from those areas.
